YOGA
Monday Evenings 7:45-8:45pm*
Sunday Evenings 7:00-8:00pm**
Yoga originated in India thousands of years ago as a system of psychological and physical practices for creating greater health, mental awareness and balance. Over the centuries, several types of yoga evolved. The yoga we will be practicing is part of the hatha yoga tradition and is a vinyasa style of yoga.
Hatha is a Sanskrit word that literally translates to "force" or "physical". It can be broken down into ha and tha. Ha represents the masculine, solar, or energizing qualities. Tha represents feminine, lunar, or relaxing qualities. So hatha yoga invokes the balance of opposites.
Yoga comes from the Sanskrit word yuj which means "yoke" or "union". Hatha yoga is the union of opposites through physical practices. Most styles of yoga share the same basic poses. In our yoga practice, we will use these poses to help create balance in the body and to complement the activities of our daily lives.
Our classes involve linking several poses together to create strength, flexibility, endurance and balance. This style is called vinyasa which means "to place in a special way". Vinyasa yoga is often referred to as yoga flow style. Our classes will effectively work all parts of the body equally, stressing a non-judgment and non-competition experience. We will focus on breathing, feeling, listening to the body, and staying in the present moment.
*Our Monday evening class will be a very gentle beginner class geared primarily toward stretching and relaxation while still incorporating some strength and balance work.
**Our Sunday evening class will be somewhat more vigorous. It will also be a beginner level class but will focus more on strength and endurance while still incorporating balance, stretching and relaxation.

Truly everyone can practice yoga and benefit from it in numerous ways."
